The Father of Chinese Aviation
•Born in Guangdong, China
•Moved to California in 1896
•Started his own aircraft factory in 1907 in Oakland, CA
•The 1st Chinese known to fly in America (and first aviator of any nationality to fly in California and the West Coast of the United States) on Sept. 22, 1909
•San Francisco Examiner – “Chinese Leaves Whites Behind in Aviation”, and called him “Oriental Wright”
•Manufactured the 1st aircraft in China in 1912 for Revolution Government
•Killed in a crash during a demo in Guangdong, China
•Moved to California in 1896

Asian Aerospace Pioneer Scholarship
Selection criteria:
– Above 3.0 GPA. Outstanding academic performance record that includes AP classes as well as engineering
studies.
– Active involvement in school activities during high school, such as Science Olympiad or Robotics;
other activities that
have provided opportunity for application of engineering skills
– Plans to pursue a college degree and career in engineering or aviation related fields. A resume that
supports the passion
for pursuing the career pathway
– An essay of ~500 words in which describe how you exemplify (or envision yourself exemplifying in the
future) the characteristics that defined the Asian Aerospace Pioneers.
